Ekaterina Panikanova

I really like these artworks by Russian artist Ekaterina Panikanova as I too like to draw and paint on printed pages.  She hasn't torn the pages out though, the books are intact so the work is 3-D and they are installations rather than just paintings and drawings.  Ekaterina arranges old books, notebooks and prints into an irregular grid and within this she explores the theme of childhood memories.

Dog Park

Babette and her owner who were very patient while I sketched them.

The sketch club went to a dog park today.  There was a plethora of  dog breeds and they were everywhere, having such a great time.  There is dog training there on a Sunday which is also interesting to watch.   It was quite challenging trying to draw the dogs which were moving all the time.  Even the dogs who were secured by their owners would be moving their heads continually as they saw a ball being thrown or another 4 legged friend going by.  I had a great time and here are a few of my results.

Mottie, , ink and watercolour.  Mot got his name because his owners wanted a dog opposite to their previous dog called Tom

Another interior- bedroom

double page spread, ink and water colour

Here's another interior, this time of a bedroom.  My current house is new but I came from one which was built in the 1880's.  The bedroom is a mix of antique things  from the old place and a piece from the 1960's.  The size of the bedroom is one of it's features, it's quite spacious for a new house.

Dragon Boat Races

Dragon Boat Races, Feb 2014
The first dragon boat races were held to celebrate Qu Yuan the great warrior poet.  Qu Yuan committed suicide in the river Mi Lo as a protest against political corruption.  That was 2000 years ago and since then dragon boat racing has become a big part of Chinese culture.
In Sydney Dragon boat races are part of Chinese New Year and held at Cockle Bay.  The boats have up to 20 paddlers and race to the beat of drums.
I joined my friends at Sketch club on Sunday trying to capture  sights which constantly moved.

Sketching in the city

Pen and watercolour sketch of the back of the Queen Victoria Building, Sydney
A sunny summer day in Sydney is perfect for a bit of sketching. I sat on Druitt St and did this sketch today.  Quite a few people stopped for a chat, asking directions or to talk about drawing.  Below is a photo of the same scene but be reassured...the sketch was done en plein air.

Japanese Gardens in Gosford

Ink and watercolour

Pen on paper by me

There is a regional gallery in Gosford, about one and a half hours north of Sydney, which is well worth a visit.  Right now there is a watercolour exhibition as well as a show of local landscapes.  Within the grounds of the gallery is a lovely Japanese garden where some time was spent sketching today.
